PCT Hiking Adventure: Shasta Town Resupply & Trail Angel Hospitality (2026)

The Trail's Tale: A Hiker's Journey and a Town's Hospitality

In the early morning hours, as the sun began to peek over the horizon, I found myself wide awake and ready to tackle the day. Little did I know, my fellow hikers had already set off, leaving me to pack up my tent alone. It's a testament to the camaraderie of the trail that even in the quiet hours, we're all moving at our own pace, yet still connected.

A Scenic Road Walk and a Generous Trail Angel

Opting for a road walk offered a unique perspective, with breathtaking views of Mount Shasta accompanying me every step of the way. The miles seemed to fly by, and before I knew it, I had reached the trailhead with time to spare. A delightful surprise awaited me there - trail magic in the form of fresh bananas and oranges, a welcome treat to fuel my journey.

Town Adventures and a Kindred Spirit

Arriving in town, we were greeted by a friendly face at the coffee shop, who not only treated us to a delicious iced maple latte but also shared stories of a fellow hiker not far behind us. It's a small world on the trail, and these connections make it all the more special. Lunch at a local spot left me craving more town food, but my stomach, accustomed to trail rations, had other plans.

A Trail Angel's Hospitality

Flash's connections led us to Crouton, a trail angel with a heart as big as the sky. Crouton, a fellow PCT hiker, offered us a unique stay in his remodeling project - a construction site turned hiker's haven. With walls, a roof, a bathroom, and even laundry, it had all the comforts we needed. Crouton's generosity knew no bounds, taking us to the Grocery Outlet for our resupply and even treating us to fish tacos made with his own catch from San Diego.

The Groce Out: A Resupply Adventure

The Grocery Outlet, or as we hikers like to call it, the Groce Out, is a treasure trove of unexpected finds. I managed to stock up on interesting trail snacks, from trail mix to chocolate balls and granola. You never know what gems you'll uncover, and that's part of the fun.

An Evening of Preparation and Reflection

Back at Crouton's, we spent the evening organizing our resupplies and catching up on laundry. It was a chance to reflect on our journey so far and prepare for the road ahead. Mt. Shasta, with its hippie vibe, left me wanting more. I can't wait to return and explore its nooks and crannies, but for now, the trail calls, and we must answer.

A Personal Reflection

What makes these trail experiences so captivating is the blend of adventure and community. From the generosity of strangers to the unique finds at the Groce Out, it's a world unto itself. I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the kindness shown to hikers like me. It's these moments that make the trail a truly special place, and I'm eager to continue my journey, one step, one town, and one kind soul at a time.
