The Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship finale at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park took an unexpected turn on Saturday, with Mother Nature playing a pivotal role in the outcome. While the day began with thrilling races in three national classes, a sudden change in weather conditions forced the postponement of the highly anticipated GP Bikes Pro Superbike race to Sunday.
In the Supersport category, Tomas Casas inched closer to his third career OPP Racing Pro Supersport title. Casas seized a crucial victory in a dramatic race one, capitalizing on Mavrick Cyr's unfortunate crash in changing conditions. The morning rain and the declaration of an "open" event by CSBK officials, allowing both wet and dry tire compounds, added an element of unpredictability to the race.
Mavrick Cyr, who started strongly from the middle of the front row, led early on but was unable to hold off the charging Casas. The championship leader, Casas, had a disastrous start, finding himself in eighth place. However, he quickly worked his way through the field, hunting down Sebastien Tremblay and eventually taking second place just before the halfway point. As the skies opened once more, Casas' progress was halted, and Cyr's lead evaporated.
The rain proved to be a game-changer as Cyr crashed out of the lead, handing the victory to Casas. Tremblay finished second, but the points lead now rests with Casas, who has a comfortable 18-point advantage going into the final race. Casas expressed relief that Cyr was unhurt but remained cautious, knowing that the championship is not yet won.
"Those points are huge, but nothing's done yet. We'll still have a big race tomorrow," Casas said.
In the Amateur Supersport category, Baillie Ives took advantage of Alexis Beaudoin's misfortune, winning race one and taking a 20-point lead into the final day of racing. Meanwhile, in the Importations Thibault Twins Cup class, J.P. Tache continued his dominant run with a close victory over Gary McKinnon. Bronti Verbeek's excellent move in turn eight secured her first podium of the season.
The Scorpion EXO ZX-4R Cup class saw Jared Walker clinch the national title with a dominant performance, securing his seventh win in a row and an unbeaten season. Walker finished over seven seconds ahead of Jacob Black, with Jean-Pascal Schroeder completing the podium.
